Honest, we keep trying to write a guide book for snowshoeing and cross country skiing in the Saratoga Springs Region, but the weather refuses to cooperate with us! Compromised Compasses 101 - Warning!

To all of my outdoor friends - A basic compass has probably saved us all from a night in the woods over the years. But in the last two years I've had no less than three of them get compromised. Couldn't figure out why. Then, this past Sunday, while conducting a nature tour with the Schwerdfeger Family in Florida, we discussed the issue. Seems that about two years ago I started carrying a Faraday flashlight in my survival kit. That's the kind you shake to get light. Mr. Schwerdfeger, who teaches orienteering classes, advised me that they have heavy duty magnets in them that can influence, or even demagnetize a compass. Bingo!!! I've always carried a backup compass in my survival kit, along with the flashlight. I'll be keeping them seperate from now on! How did I get to be this old and not figure that out? :-) Hope you also learn from this. Enjoy the great outdoors - safely!

Northwest Bay Preserve - Lake George, NY

We like to periodically re-visit the trails we list in our books. Listed in our book, 25 Short hikes and Interesting Walks in the Lake George, NY Area, on page 107, are the trails of the Northwest Bay Preserve. Here is an update: As if it wasn't already hard enough to find this site without our specific directions, the original kiosk has now fallen down. But, the yellow loop trail of 1.2 miles is still well marked. It may be a little difficult to follow from marker to marker amongst the yellow fall leaves, but we did just did it today and so can you. Fall Foliage in the Adirondacks

We ran into this fine fellow just south of Indian Lake on Route 30. We think he is surveying the great fall foliage that is just developing in the Adirondacks. Colors, colors and colors are the watchwords for what is unfolding this year. The wet weather seems to have intesified the colors. So get out this weekend, go up into the Adirondacks, and enjoy the beauty of Nature. We will!

Parks & Trails NY - Finger Lakes Conference - 2011

Parks & Trails NY is a non-profit advocacy group for opportunities for hiking and biking in New York. I had the opportunity to attend a GREAT conference they put on in the Finger Lakes Region of New York this past weekend. They brought together regional trail advocates, land trust people, government officials and outdoor media representatives. There were seminars on funding sources, trail design and a host of other courses. It was a well organized and successful conference. You can learn more about Parks & Trails NY, and their advocacy events on their website at: http://www.ptny.org/. Watch for future conferences like the one this weekend. It was a valuable resource for the outdoor community. In this photo Vince Scalia of the Cayuga-Seneca Trail Association is explaining how they are using local donations of time/service to add to the grants they are obtaining from public and private sources for their newest project of a linear canal park. He stressed that "patience" might be your greatest asset on such a project.

Coles Woods - Glens Falls-Queensbury September 18th

Nine outdoor enthusiasts took a wildflower walk on Sunday, September 18th, 2011. The group was made up of ADK members and others. It was a GREAT day. Good weather and we found a surprising number of wildflowers still in bloom. We used our Summer wildflower book to identify them. Wildlife Sports and Educational Museum

We had heard about this museum in Vail Mills, NY, somewhere around Amsterdam. We thought it would be some simple museum with a few stuffed animals. Well, we got there a few days ago, and boy, were we surprised! This is a 14,000 sq. ft. museum of wildlife, hunting, fishing and trapping with specimens from all over the world. The $10.00 entry fee was well worth the price. If you have ANY interest in the outdoors you need to get there. ADK Summer Outings - Saratoga/Glens Falls Chapter

I have agreed to leading half a dozen outings this summer for the Saratoga/Glens Falls Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club - ADK. They will all be C class hikes, bikes and canoe/kayak trips. That means they are easy. And, we can call them "Sundays at 3" since that is when they are scheduled. That's after church or whatever else you do on Sundays. :-) Anyone can join these outings by calling me and making a reservation. You do not have to be an ADK member, but members do get priority and advance notice, and by contract the outings are limited to 12 participants, including me. Letchworth State Park - Grand Canyon of the East!

We just left Letchworth State Park. Its gorges and waterfalls are wonderful. It is a hidden treasure, just south of Rochester, NY. It has hiking trails, you can bike its quiet roadways, stay at hidden resorts and even whitewater raft, canoe or kayak along the waters of the Genesee River that flow through this ancient gorge. Coles Woods wildflowers

In Search of Spring Wilflowers, I scouted Coles Woods today. Here's what I found. The skunk cabbage is up and spreading its leaves out in most places. Coltsfoot flowers are all along some paths. The yellow Marsh Marigolds are up and blooming. Fiddlehead ferns are just arriving, and the Red Trilliums, as illustrated here, are up, with more on the way. Spring is truly here, FINALLY!!!! Springtime at Hovey Pond

The last remnants of snow are nearly gone. So we thought we would take a walk around Hovey Pond in the Town of Queensbury to see if spring had arrived yet. We found the birds singing, small green shoots coming out of the ground and even the flowers in this photo already in full bloom. So get out an enjoy! Northern New York - Spring events

Hello to my frozen friends in the North Country. Y'all been through a tough winter - snow, cold and gray. But all that will change in about 30+ days. Spring is coming, I promise!

1. When it does we will roll out our new book on canoeing/kayaking in the Saratoga Springs Region - 1st or 2nd week of April.

2. Around the same time we will resume our quest to complete the ADK Firetower Challenge. We'll keep you up to date on THAT Blog as we progress all summer. Book to follow!

3. The wildflowers will also start to bloom and we'll do a Spring Wildflower Tour based on our Lake George Regional wildflower books.

So hang in there! The end of winter is near, despite the 10 inches of snow you got this weekend. :-)

Red Hill Firetower

As one of my last treks before leaving for the winter, we trekked up to the Red Hill Firetower in the Catskill Park. It's one of the towers on our ADK Firetower Challenge list. And, as you can tell from the photo, there were several inches of snow on the ground. Not enough to require the use of our snowshoes, but enough to explore multiple critter tracks and a great, pristine day in the woods. Life was VERY good that day. so get out and enjoy winter when you can. Not EVERY day is a Nor'easter.

Snowshoeing - Cortland, NY

On my way south I spent a great weekend with my niece and nephew. Part of it was snowshoeing the Hope Lake Nordic Ski Center at Greek Peak, not far from Cortland, NY. Conditions varied, but it was a GREAT day to be out snowshoeing the miles of trails. Here's a pic of the warming hut where we started. We highly recommend it for an hour or an afternoon.

Fall is fell! Winter's here and it's colder than....i want

It's December 6th, and that's snow on the brim of my hat as I boat down the Hudson River. It's almost time to head south. I'll head there in about 10 days. But it was a GREAT summer biking the 450 miles of the Erie Canal. I've enjoyed great friends, both new and old, on that trip and the entire 9 months here in Northern New York. And, I'll stay in touch all winter; jusy not as frequently. In April, we'll start running a new blog on our Adirondack Firetower Challenge and climbing 20 more mountains. ADK Firetower Challenge - 2011

Okay, we finished our 450 mile Erie Canal bicycle trip in 2010. So what's next?

It's the ADK Firetower Challenge for 2011. And we've already started it. To complete it we need to climb 18 of the 23 Fire tower mountains in the Adirondacks; and all five of the Catskill Mtn firetowers. As of this date we have climbed four of them. Hadley, Black, Spruce and Kane in the fall of 2010. We'll try for Woodhull Mtn with mtn bikes and hiking on Dec 11th if the weather is decent. Then we'll start again in the spring. If you have any interest in joining us on Dec 11th or for any of the spring and summer outimgs, e-mail me at: Roger@RogerFulton.com. We only hike afternoons and evenings as a rule, but would be glad to have the company. We'll start running a formal Blog on our trek after the first of the year, just like we did for the Erie Canal trek. Check back then.

Kayaking - Saratoga Springs, NY region

Those of you who read this blog always want to know what is new and what we are working on for a new outdoor trail guidebook. The next book to come out wil be about kayaking in the Daytona Beach and Orlando areas of Central Florida. We expect that to be released around October 15th.

But today, Mike and I were out working on a canoeing/kayaking/fishing book for the Saratoga Springs region of NY. We hope to finish the 25 locations this fall, for publication in time for the kayaking season next spring. The photo is of Mike on a beatiful creek on a beautiful day.

We were at Coles Woods in Glens Falls/Queensbury to try out our new camera today. The flowers in our book Wildflowers of the Lake George, NY Region - Summer Edition are still blooming. Back to the Erie Canal

We took a couple of weeks off from our bicycle trip along the Erie Canal to spend time with friends and family. But we're headed back to Utica, NY to resume our trip today. We've completed about 270 miles of our 400 mile trip. We travel a lot faster than this horse drawn Packet Boat we rode in Rome, NY. But, 400 miles does take time, whether by pedal or horse. Target shooting in Northern NY

When we take time off from our current Erie Canal bicycling trek, we still enjoy our lives and our friends. In this case my buddy Chris is up from Florida to get a break from the oppressive heat. While it was pretty oppressive here by OUR standards, Chris was up for anything in the outdoors. Here he is seen out target shooting at an undisclosed location along the Hudson River. Only two Bud Light cans and a few bullseye targets were harmed during the making of this Blog entry. And a good time was had by all!

Erie Canal trek 2010

You may have noticed fewer posts on this Blog recently. That's because we have been biking the 400 miles of the Erie Canal trails this last couple of weeks, and we will continue to do so through the summer. We're only doing about 20 miles a day and seeing the sites. And, cocktail hour has to be observed at a reasonable hour as well.

Hudson River wildlife

So, we're out fishing on the Hudson River when a mother Red-Headed Merganser and her 5 chicks came by. But, they were elusive. So this is the best pic I got of the five chicks. It was at the Sherman Island launch site, featured in our Lake George kayaking book.

Spring Wildflowers are out! Everywhere!

In the last week we have explored Denton Wildlife Sanctuary, Hovey Pond and made a tour of the Lake Placid; Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake areas of the Adirondacks. We took our own book to those areas and had a great time walking, hiking and finding and identifying wildflowers from Trilliums to Gaywings to Violets.

Sleeping Beauty Mtn Hike - Snow! April 18th!!!!

Lake George, NY area people know that a hike up to the 2200 foot summit of Sleeping Beauty Mountain on the eastern shore rewards them with a wonderful view of Lake George and its islands. On a drizzly, rainy day today I hiked up the mountain for a workout and the view. Little did I know that I would run into a snow squall about 100 feet down from the summit. It's April 18th, and SNOW! Hope it's the last I see until November.

Pilot Knob Ridge trails

Here's a pic of Lake George from the gazebo on top of Pilot Knob Ridge taken a couple of days ago. It's a 600 foot climb over .6 miles to the top, but the view is worth it.

We just spent several days in the field in Northern NY. Ticks were a serious concern. On one day I took 7 ticks off of my clothes, and one off of my body.
The deer tick, officially known as the Black Legged Tick is the one that causes Lyme Disease. You don't want that disease. It makes the H1N1 virus look like a weak contender.
So, if you will be in the field, hiking, biking, hunting or looking for mushrooms, check you and your companion for ticks that evening. Might even be fun after a couple of glasses of wine. :-)

Historic Bridge, Hadley, NY

In researching our future Saratoga kayaking book, we ventured up the Hudson River to where the Sacandaga River and the Hudson River converge in Hadley, NY. We took our own modern photos of the historic bridge there. But Fran Williams of Corinth, NY turned us on to this 1880 picture of the same bridge, as it was at that time. Note the train going over the other bridge!

Deer Hunting Season in NY

Yes, it's hunting season in New York once again. For our hiking and biking friends, yes you can share the woods with those who are after Bambi's deadbeat dad. Be sure to wear bright clothing at all times and stay on the trails whenever possible. If you think there may be hunters around, make your presence known by talking. The primary issue with hunters is not your presence, it is that your scent will scare off deer. But they have no more rights than you to be in the woods. But let common sense prevail on both parts.

I personally have NEVER heard of a hiker or biker being shot by a hunter. But still, try not to look like this guy on the right.

Hudson River kayaking and foliage

We spent the afternoon on the Hudson River out of the Sherman Island Boat Launch. (It's in our Lake George kayaking book.)
While there we found Ken Burl of Corinth out enjoying the day and his Hornbeck boat. We had heard and read about the Hornbecks but Ken displayed his for us with a beautiful backdrop of fall foliage colors.

Bicycling in New York

We wondered if bicycling is truly a dangerous sport in the U.S., or is it fear-mongering by the media? So we did some research.
There are roughly 80 million bike riders in the U.S. who bike, at least 6 times a year.
Now, look at what that is in terms of zeroes. 80,ooo,ooo,ooo.
And our calculator can't handle that number.
And in 2007, roughly 700 bike riders died, nationwide. Even if it was 800, you do the division if you can on your own calculator. The precentage is miniscule. Unless you, or your loved one, was one of those.
About 540,000 bicyclists sought treatment at Emergency Rooms in 2007. And 67,000 of those had head injuries. One-half of all injuries were persons under 16 years of age.
So, our conclusion is that if you bike, be careful. And, wear a helmet.
Other than that, go out and enjoy bicycling; both on and off road, wear a helmet, and get older than 16.
This is a public service announcement, and a pro-bicycling announcement as well.

Lake George Region - Spring Wildflowers in bloom

We've been out the last few days exploring the Spring Wildflowers of the region. This is the time when there are so many beautiful spring wildflowers in bloom. You just have to get out and enjoy them. Hit the upper Betar Byway in South Glens Falls, Coles Woods in Glens Falls or Pack Demonstration Forest north of Warrensburg. They are all great!! But those flowers will fade soon, so get out there!!

Spring is sprung!

One of the first signs that Spring has arrived in the North Country is the appearance of Skunk Cabbage sprouts. There is actually a wildflower wrapped up inside the leaves you are seeing on the outside. Soon the leaves will unfurl and you can see what's inside.

In case you weren't aware, I've been working with Diane Collins, a wildflower specialist, for the past year on two upcoming wildflower books. We hope to have the SPRING edition out in April. Then you can read all about Skunk Cabbage and 74 more wildflowers to come out April-June. Then comes the SUMMER edition with another 75.

Lake George Biking

We went biking up in Lake George Village this past afternoon. Between the snowbanks. Spring IS coming, albeit a little slow up there.

But a rumor has also sufaced that our new book, 25 Interesting Bicycle Trails in the Lake George, NY Region has been published and should be available for sale to the public next week. Just in time for the spring thaw!
